Comedian Conan O’Brien responded to criticism this week for accepting the prestigious Mark Twain Award for American humor last month. Kennedy Center.

“Obviously, there have been some controversial things in the Kennedy Center over the past few months in the new administration,” O’Brien said in an episode of this week’s podcast, “Conan O’Brien needs friends.”

“I was asked, “Can I go? Please don’t go?” And I felt it was important to show up,” O’Brien said on his show.

“We were brought under the old administration,” he explained, adding that the old leadership at the Kennedy Center “we’re not there anymore, but we should respect their decisions.”

“It was really lovely because the young people who worked at the Kennedy Center for many years were happy that we were here,” he said. “They don’t know what their future is.”
