Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dyke signs contract extension at Anfield


Virgil Van Dijk has signed a new contract with Liverpool.

The Reds skipper’s current deal expired at the end of the season, but he has written at least two years of a fresh term that will remain at Anfield.

He told the club’s website:

“It’s a feeling of pride, it’s a joy. It’s incredible. The journey I’ve had in my career so far to be able to expand it for two more years at this club is fantastic.

The news was widely anticipated after Dutch international confirmed progress last week after long negotiations.

The 33-year-old said that although he was linked to his move to Saudi Arabia, his first choice always remains at Merseyside.

Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton in 2018 for £705 million. This was the world record fee for defenders at the time.

He made 314 appearances for Liverpool, helping to win the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups.
