Minivan plows into Liverpool football celebrities crowd, 53-year-old man has been detained


Police arrested a minivan driver on Monday after authorities said they had plowed the crowd. Liverpool, UKinjured dozens of people who were celebrating the city’s soccer team’s Premier League Championship.

Police have identified the driver as a 53-year-old British man from the Liverpool area. Police also added that they believe this is an isolated incident and do not believe that no one else has been involved. The incident has not been investigated as a terrorist act.

Northwest Air Ambulance Dave Kitchen said at a press conference Monday that 27 people were taken to the hospital, two seriously injured, and a further 20 people were treated for minor injuries at the scene. At least four children were injured. One of those children was seriously injured.

Firefighters responding to the scene had to lift the van to free three adults and one child trapped underneath them. The paramedic, a cyclist on the scene, was also hit by the van, but authorities said they were not injured.

Merseyside police In an X’s post, he said he is investigating a report of a crash in Liverpool city centre after being contacted with multiple pedestrians on Water Street after 6pm on Monday.

Police added that the vehicle was stopped at the scene and the man was taken into custody.

“We ask people not to speculate about the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre,” police said in a separate post. “We can confirm that the arrested man is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area. A widespread (inquiry) is underway to establish the situation leading up to the conflict.”

Instead of sharing “disastrous content” online, police have asked the public to send footage and information to Meeseaside police or criminals.

Videos posted on social media Prior to the police department’s request not to share information online, the grey minivan striking at least one pedestrian showed more people turning to, passing through the group, paving the way, and pushing their bodies along the path like arable before halting.

The Associated Press spoke with Harry Rashid, who was at the Liverpool parade with his wife and two young daughters.

Rashid said the car thrusts people into the area about 10 feet away from him.

“It was very fast,” he said. “In the beginning, I just heard pop, pop, pop, pop from people being knocked out of the hood of a car.”

British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer In X’s post, he said he was kept up to date with developments regarding the situation and asked police to be given the space needed to carry out the investigation.

“The Liverpool scene is horrifying. My thoughts are with everyone who has been injured or affected,” he writes. “We would like to thank the police and emergency services for their prompt and ongoing response to this shocking incident.”

The incident came after a massive celebration in the city centre. There, tens of thousands of dancers, scarves and flag-waving fans line the streets to encourage the rainy weather, and Liverpool players will see Premier League trophies on two buses that hold our words.

Rashid told the AP that after the van struck the first victim, it stopped, and the crowd charged the vehicle and smashed the windows.

“But he put his feet down again and plowed the rest, and he just kept going,” Rashid said. “It was horrifying, and you could hear the bumps as he was over the people.”

“My daughter started screaming, and there was someone on the ground,” he added. “They were just innocent people, just fans were enjoying the parade.”
