Buy Informatica Salesforce $800 million data play for AI advantage


Salesforce announced Tuesday that it was buying data management software company Informatica for a transaction worth $8 billion.

Under the agreement, Salesforce acquires all outstanding shares of Informatica’s common stock that it does not yet own. Informatica shareholders will receive $25 in cash per share, the company said.

Salesforce shares rose Tuesday morning after the announcement.

The goal of the transaction, which reportedly collapsed about a year ago after differences of opinion over terms, is to bolster Salesforce’s data foundation. The company says it is “crucial to deploying strong and responsible agent AI.”

Bloomberg first reported last week that companies are undergoing high-level consultations over new contracts.

The company said that Informatica’s data catalogue, data integration, governance, quality and privacy, metadata management, and the sales force platform will “ensure AI agents can operate safely, responsible, and at scale across modern enterprises to establish a unified architecture for Agent AI.”

When the deal was announced, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said the company will “create the most fully agent-enabled data platform in the industry.”

One way Salesforce is trying to gain control is through aggressive acquisition strategies. In 2018, it acquired the software platform Mulesoft. The platform provides tools and services for the construction, integration, and management of application programming interfaces that allow a variety of software programs to interact. Three years later, he signed a deal to acquire Slack Technologies Inc, a workplace chat app.

Washington added that the company will quickly integrate the company’s capabilities and unleash synergies on a fast timeline, particularly in areas such as the public sector, life sciences, healthcare and financial services.
