Bescent warns Newsom against blocking California federal tax payments

Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent filed accusations California Governor Gavin Newsom He threatened to commit tax evasion after the state threatened to stop paying “over $80 billion” taxes it pays to the federal government.

“Californians pay the federal government bill,” Newsom said in X. “We’re paying more than $80 billion in taxes than we’re back. It’s probably time to cut it off.
If the California governor chases his threat, Bescent said in X’s Sunday post that it would constitute tax evasion.

Newsom’s office did not immediately respond to a request for Fox Business’s comment.
