Xbox Games Showcase: The Outer Worlds 2 takes clues from Fallout: New Vegas
A special flavor of Obsidian Entertainment’s SF Corporate Dystopia has returned to The Outer Worlds 2, where we went into the latest first-person shooter RPG in the latest feature segment. Xbox Games Showcase 2025.
Outer World 2 is a much larger game than its predecessor, despite being limited to only one planet (the first outside world had two planets, with a few asteroids and a space station locations). Obsidian has doubling its commitment to a fame RPG experience, borrowing the best part of its signature hit game, Fallout: New Vegas.
Outer World 2 planet Arcadia is a dangerous place with landscapes and propaganda inspired by the battlefields of the First World War. As you step into the war between giant giants in the frontier world, all your wisdom (and proper builds and loadouts) is needed to survive.
Here are some things you need to look forward to when Outer World 2 is announced on October 29th:
Players can augment their builds in a way that completely changes the way they approach quests throughout the game.
Classic obsidian RPG elements are back in a big way
The Outer World encourages players to put skill points into specific forms of combat and skills, but the sequels lean heavily towards specializing in your character build.
This time, your character is an agent of Earth Station, and he is stepping into the middle of a war with Arcadia as a de facto “good man.” However, there are three major options when creating characters that completely change the way the game is played.
You can choose the background of your character despite being a law enforcement agency. This changes some of the approach to problem solving throughout the game. You can become a by-books officer, a bad cop, or a lazy lice.
You will also have the opportunity to change the interaction options and choose positive and negative traits that give you passive buffs and debuffs that affect your build.
Finally, assign skill points. The Outer World 2 skill tree is condensed into fewer options from the first game, but each skill point you use is more impactful. This is very familiar to fans of that particular ARPG, as Obsidian Entertainment is a completely “borrowed” system from Fallout: New Vegas.
Buildcraft will not finish when you leave the character creation screen. Some of the most eccentric skills in the game are character flaws offered based on gameplay style. If you are squatting frequently, you will get a permanent movement speed buff, but if you warn nearby enemies, your knees will get worse if you have bad knees. If you are forced to steal from a vendor, fence the item will earn you a bonus cash, but your character will be automatically plundered.
These defects can develop cataracts and gain debuffs to fire the entire magazine without reloading. These are just examples of how build and roleplay experiences evolve throughout the game.
One of the friendly faces you meet is the victim of an experiment that tested the limbs of an animal. Godric sends his respect for the transplanted ones.
New planets, mates, and corporate propaganda
The original Outer World game took place in some limited vignettes in the Halcyon Star system, but Outer World 2 focuses on a single planet caught up in a three-way conflict between authoritarian protectors, altruistic order and ruthless auntie cleo’s Corporation.
Cleo’s Aunt has a strong grasp of Arcadia, but the dangerous fractures in the space known as warp are threatening the company’s profits. All three factions want to resolve warp for their own selfish reasons, but they don’t work together to do so – instead, they are fighting for the support of the players to win the power struggle.
Of course, you are brave through Arcadia, so you don’t just deal with faceless factions. Six new companions are scattered around the world, each equipped with special gear, skills and character quests.
One of my favorite parts of the showcase was a dread-like judge named Tristan. Players can encourage his extrajudicial brand of justice and suppress his murderous plot.
It may be worth it to find alternative ways across the bridge just to avoid dealing with these people.
Different approaches to solving problems
If you’re not trying to film a way out of all situations, you don’t need to. Obsidian is committed to allowing them to film, stealth and talk about how to get out of problems throughout the game. In certain scenarios, you can also understand more unorthodox ways to complete the task at hand.
The Outer World Showcase used examples from the early stages of the game. In this example, the player must cross the bridge under the jurisdiction of the Protectorate. They have a raptor problem and no one is allowed to pass until it is handled. The easiest way to access the bridge is to help soldiers wipe out the Raptors, but there are also clever (and unethical) solutions.
Players can easily find a hover boot to fly over the groove, avoiding the need for bridges entirely. The most evil and selfish players can throw their new companions into the raptors and be torn by them, creating distractions that they themselves can avoid danger.
By using your brain to participate in character builds, you will always find ways to advance. This is another important point from fallout. This is the new philosophy of Vegas design.
This time, the gun has a little more character, with special reload animations and tuned sound designs.
First person photography is not in the back seat
Obsidian games generally focus on RPG elements first and foremost. Gunplay is not an afterthought, but it is not usually something you write at home. In Outer World 2, the guns have gained mechanical and atmosphere-based upgrades, which help instantaneous gameplay become more responsive and exciting.
Aiming is a smoother experience, allowing players to gain more reliable crack shots at enemy downranges. And new animations for weapon exchanges, reloads and other gun interactions will help improve arsenal management.
The weapon’s recoil is mitigated to make more guns feel like a satisfying bullet hose, and the sound design is ritant, with more weapons making a crisp and impactful sound.
There are also far more weapons in Outer World 2, including helping to wash away the introduction of easy-to-throwers like enemy hand rena bullets and noise makers from the cover.
By returning scientific weapons, you get buffs to bring them inline to your new gadget and gun roster.
A strange arrangement of weapons
Outer World 2 features traditional weapons, laser rifles and explosive launchers. However, players want to corner a special scientific weapon with truly unique shooting modes and effects.
Some scientific weapons have returned from the first game using buffs, and become even more viable, like a shrink cree that doesn’t wear enemies (and this time you can walk and wash them like a bug).
Other scientific weapons are all new treats that can be added to your armory. There are tumor guns that fire exploding pustules, guns that shoot at the arms that latch, enemies, enemy enemies, and legally different BFGs that shred enemies with bubble energy, swords that deal more damage when attacking them.
Science Armor has also made its debut. One nasty meaty bodysuit was seen in the showcase. In the new Third Person Camera Mode in Outer World 2, you can see these armor fragments in glory for the first time.
Outer World 2 will be released on October 29th for the Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
