Anti-Israel activist Mahmoud Khalil was released on bail from the immigration detention centre on Friday. Order by the judge.

Halil, a graduate student at Columbia University, will leave the federal facility in Louisiana before 7pm on Friday to head to New York, where his wife and baby live. He must notify the Department of Homeland Security within 48 hours of his address after he arrives in New York.

US District Judge Michael Fabiartz said in his order Friday it was “very, very rare” to retain legal US residents without risk of flights and not accused of violent crimes.

“The petitioner is not a flight risk and the evidence presented is that he is not a risk to the community,” Farbeers said. “Full stop for the period.”

Halil’s lawyers said in a letter to the court before the judge’s ruling, his imprisonment at the detention center in Jena, Louisiana, was a “very rare” decision on the part of the government and amounted to unconstitutional retaliation.

Halil was arrested in Colombia in March over his pro-Palestinian activities on campus. The immigration judge ruled He could be ruled out of the country that he said his campus protests were in conflict with the interests of US foreign policy, based on a memo from Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

but, Ministry of Homeland Security (DHS) added a second reason to detain Halil and attempt to deport him. DHS is said to have omitted important information from the green card application about the group he belongs to, including the apartheid sale at Columbia University.

The Halil incident has become a lightning bolt for anti-Israeli protesters and immigration rights defenders. They argued that the Trump administration was opposed to the Israeli government and was retaliating against him for chilling the free speech of those opposing Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip and the conflict with Iran.

Halil must give up his passport, but is given a green card and allowed to travel to New York, Michigan. There are family members to appear in court, New Jersey, Louisiana, and Washington, DC for lobbying.

The Trump administration has called for a preliminary injunction and the release of Halil in the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.
