Sanjay Manjrekar makes a U-turn after Indian Captain Shubman Gill destroys the century against England in the Headingley Test
With a dramatic turn of events on the first day of First Test between England and India at Headingleycricketer-turned commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has publicly overturned his previous stance on the appointment of Shubmangill as test captain. Gill, who leads India for the first time in the Test, silenced critics, including Manjurekal himself, earning an unbeaten 127, leading India to a dominant position against England.
Sanjay Manjrekar’s first take on India’s new test captain
Manjlekal, known for his honest opinion, was speaking out about his preferences Jasprit Bumrah As Rohit Sharma’s retirement Indian test captain. “Let’s go back as soon as he becomes captain. Honestly, I disagreed with it. I felt that Justin Bumra was a better, more logical choice without thinking about moving forward in the future. I didn’t think it was the right decision at the time.” Manjrekar confirmed on Match Center Live after Stumps.
However, Bumra declined to be captain and cited a continuing recovery from a serious back injury that limited his ability to play five consecutive tests. This opened the door for Gill, 25. That test record has previously caused concern among experts and fans.
Shubmangill’s record of his test captain debut
After a solid start from openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, Gill quickly found a rhythm against England’s offense featuring Brydon Carse, Josh Toungh, Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes. He formed a significant 129-run partnership with Jayzwal, who reached the century before taking India to 359/3 on the stump with the resurrected Rishabhupang.
Looking back at Gill’s performance, Manjrekar highlighted the technical improvements of the young captain. “The only concern was that he was still evolving, especially in terms of the situation overseas. But today he worked on a critical technical field that had previously stopped him from getting big things overseas. Yes, the pitch was good and bowling wasn’t too challenging, but his temperament in particular was not broken by all other technical flaws.”
Gill’s undefeated 127-off 175 ball won him a century in his Test Captain debut and joined the elite company of Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gabascal, Dilip Vensarkar and Virat Kohli. His innings not only commanded India, but also marked his first overseas century. It is an important milestone in his career.
