Iran chooses to fight

Tehran is now facing a choice: surrender or retaliation. Based on history, ideology and culture, the odds overwhelmingly support retaliation.

Suspension is in conflict with Iran’s revolutionary thinking. The Islamic Republic has endured wars, sanctions and obstructions. That leadership interprets resistance as a divine duty. The strike may have undermined Iran’s enriched infrastructure, but it could strengthen the regime’s resolve.

Misdirection and “deception” are likely to be key in Trump administrators’ surprise Iranian strike

Iran maintains a wide range of capabilities, including ballistic missiles, global proxy networks, cyber weapons, and elite paramilitary forces. This is not the end. This is the beginning of a new phase.

Four possible Iranian reactions

1. Regional attacks on US assets: Iran could target US military bases and diplomats in Iraq, Syria and the Gulf countries through proxy militias like Kataib Hezbollah and Houtis. With US casualties, it could force a wider war.
2. Destruction of the oil route: Iran could attempt to block or threaten Strait of Hormuzalmost 20% of the world’s oil choke points. Even a short turmoil can cause global energy prices to rise.
3. Be attacked by US allies: Expect missile or proxy attacks against Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and especially Israel. Iranian allies in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza are already in preparation.
4. Asymmetric attacks attack overseas: The global network of Iranian operatives includes sleep cells from Latin America, Europe and perhaps the US. If Tehran thinks it will barely lose, civilian targets and cyber infrastructure may be in its crosshairs.

Was this a strategic miscalculation?

The risks are real if President Trump acts without solid intelligence. That means we have caused a long war on unstable grounds. Prepare for the shadow war

The United States and its allies must pivot quickly towards containment, deterrence and resilience. Air defenses need to be strengthened. You need to protect your cyber infrastructure. Intelligence reporting agencies should track Iranian networks overseas. And most importantly, diplomatic channels must remain open to allies and, if possible, to the enemy.

This is not a time of self-satisfaction. It’s a time for clear strategy, disciplined leadership and vigilance.

After applause, calculation
