Pasteur’s research on molecules rested on a previous discovery by Augustine Jean Fresnel in 1822. Today, physicists consider chirality to be the fundamental property of all basic particles, like charges and mass. Massless particles are always moving at the speed of light, and they all carry intrinsic angular momentum as if they were rotating as if they were on top. If particles are flying in the direction of your thumb, their spins will continue in the direction of your fingers – either your right hand or your left.
The situation is a little more complicated with large particles such as electrons and quarks. Larger particles move more slowly, allowing a quick observer to pass it and effectively reverse its direction, thus allowing it to turn its apparent dominant hand over it. Therefore, when describing the chirality of a large particle, physicists often refer to mathematical descriptions of the quantum properties of a particle. When a particle is rotated, its quantum wave function shifts left or right depending on its chirality.
Almost every basic particle has twins in the glass that looks like. Negatively charged left-handed electrons are reflected by anti-positrons, negatively charged right-handed particles.
