Taiwan is in a hurry to build his own drone before it’s too late

Fang and her colleagues released a lengthy report on June 16th revealing how slow the drone industry in Taiwan is. The country has produced between 8,000 and 10,000 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over the past year, with “structural challenges” standing in the way of current rates and ambitious targets. Their research found that Taiwan’s drone production was hampered by “high manufacturing costs, low domestic procurement and minimal orders from foreign governments.”

Taiwan has lived under the threat of Chinese invasion for decades, but in recent years it has turned it into a more pressing possibility. Beijing has made it clear that it intends to complete the active modernization of the People’s Liberation Army by 2027. Taiwanese officials say the invasion could come early before the current term of the prime minister ends in 2029.
Although precisely there are competing views on the form that China’s military attacks can take, Taiwan’s military analysts fear it is a fully combined weapon onslaught.

Taipei has already made some of this rights. In 2022, the government launched the drone national team, a program aimed at aligning government and industry to expand its early fields. In particular, the team was sent from Ukraine to learn lessons. The defensive strategy of Ukrainian lessons relies heavily on small, tactical and inexpensive UAVs that run multiple missions and can be closely integrated with ground units. Today, the country boasts a large domestic drone industry. This year, we plan to purchase 4.5 million small drones this year, along with long-range non-black and white missile programs, autonomous land vehicles and unfrozen naval drones.
