Two of the world’s largest food manufacturers, Mills and General Kraftheinz, pledged last week to remove all artificial dyes from their respective US portfolios by the end of 2027. The move came amid a call from the Trump administration to make the country’s food supply more transparent and ensure the safety of food chemicals. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in May that it had begun a stronger review process for food chemicals already on the market.
Artificial dyes are known as FD&C colors and are labeled as such on the packaging as the color additives are approved by the FDA for use in food, drugs and cosmetics. They are subject to a strict approval system under the Federal Food, Drugs and Cosmetics Act (FD&C Act).

Kennedy Jr. has been working to cut colour from US food supplies, claiming that “some food producers have long fed Americans’ petroleum-based chemicals without knowledge or consent.” He also said that these “toxic compounds do not provide nutritional benefits and pose realistic and measurable risks to the health and development of children.”
