Shakur Stevenson Vs. William Zepeda: Promoter Eddie Hearn foreshadows a slow stop in Shakur’s round, highlighting his underrated punching power
Promoter Eddie Hearn picks WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson to separate William Zepeda, knocking him out in the round after the fight in Queens, New York on July 12th.
Shakur’s Punch Power
Khan says fans don’t realize that Shakur (23-0, 10 KOs) is by chance a puncher with excellent technical skills. His final fight with Josh Padry showed his strength when he stopped him with a body shot last February.
It is his fragile hands that keep Stephenson from becoming a puncher. He has had problems with his hands for a while and it appears he can throw with strength into his body. It is a safe area for fighter jets thrown by fragile hands.
“In fact, I think Shakur will stop Zepeda. I know that Shakur has the perception that he is not a puncher. He’s technically great, but I think Zepeda’s style suits him,” Eddie Hearn told Ring magazine. YouTube Channel predicts Shakur Stevenson’s victory over William Zepeda.
The victory that that knockout picked up in his final fight against his late substituted opponent, Josh Padry, could have given Hearn a false impression. It was an old-fashioned matchmaking. Hearn chose a part-time boxer from the UK as the fill-in when his originally planned opponent, Floyd Schofield, retreated. In hindsight, it was a lucky break for Shakur.
When Stephenson stands in his pocket and tries to knock Zepeda out, he is machine-fired with a Mexican brawler combination. The only way Shakur is in his pocket against Zepeda is whether he has many hugs like Tevin Farmer survived.
“He’s going to get him and I think he’ll hurt him. Zepeda is proud so I think he’ll stop him later in the fight, so I love this fight,” Hahn said.
Stevenson’s Body Shot Strategy
Stevenson is unable to stand in front of Zepeda and load the body shots he did against electrician Padry. That doesn’t work. He gets hit so many times that he is forced to leave his pocket to escape the avalanche of punches Zepeda throws. You’ll be standing there and asking Shakur for trouble.
