Q2 sees a strong surge in ETF closures and liquidation
According to data from FactSet, Exchange-Traded Fund Closures accelerated in the second quarter, with 61 funds closed in the first quarter, compared to 40 closures.
Asset managers trimmed their lineups in busy markets, bringing out plugs of lower-performing and niche ETFs at a faster pace. June alone saw 27 closures in 2025, the busiest month of ETF shutdowns.
The closure hits sector-wide funds merchandise In Clean EnergyFactSet says that because companies have x products that have not been able to gather enough assets or catch up with their rivals.
The Hartford Fund closed four ETFs on June 23rd. Hartford Multifactor has developed an international ETF (Rode) and Hartford Schroders Commodity Strategy ETF (HCOM)according to Factset. The Hartford Fund recorded positive returns that year, ranging from 3% to 16.3%.

IPATH closed several product exchange trade notes during June. IPath Bloomberg Platinum Subindex Total Return ETN (PGMFF) and IPath Bloomberg Grains Subindex Total Return ETN (JJGTF)according to the data. Platinum ETN was acquired by 44.2% year before closing June 25th.
Clean Energy and tech funds were hits in the quarter, with several closures in both regions. Vaneck Green Infrastructure ETF (RNEW) On June 23rd, the yearly declined by 0.2%, WisdomTree Battery Value Chain and Innovation Fund (WBAT) Shut down June 20th with a gain of 5.4%.
According to data, the closure took steam up until the quarter, with 19 funds closed on April and May 15th in May.
Some funds performed quite well before the closure Hartford Multi-Cap International Small Company ETF (ROIS)with a gain of 16.3%, Simplify the macro strategy ETF (Figure)According to Factset, it’s an increase of 16.2%.
Others struggled before closing Defiance Next GenerationH2ETF (HDRO)25.4% decrease Defiance Daily Target 2x Long Uranium ETF (URAX)Data shows this has dropped by more than 35%.
