Is the third time appealing to Serrano for Taylor?
There is an old proverb that says, “The third time is charm!” Will this finally become Amanda’s “Real Deal”?
The former Igbo and WBO world featherweight champion are losing for Taylor, lightweight and super light, and with a third chance, she feels this will be her third win.
At the second meeting last November, all three judges won Taylor’s 95-94. Taylor lost points due to a headbutt in round 8.
Taylor, 39, and Serrano, 36, know each other well. In April 2022, Taylor won by a split decision by defending his WBO World Lightweight title against Serrano at Madison Square Garden.
Eight months ago, Serrano defended the 124-year-old IBO, WBC and WBO titles in August 2021, appearing on this Friday’s card against IBF, WBO and IBO Super Bantam Weight Champion Ellie Scotney.
He defeated Spain’s Miriam Gutierrez, who had previously lost to Taylor after defeating Serrano in a non-title match in December 2021. Serrano weighed 139¼ for that match, jumping about 15 pounds and losing the split decision to Taylor.
On Friday, Taylor, 24-1, six stops and Serrano, 47-3-1, will once again compete for Taylor’s ultra-light title. Serrano has a limited amateur career and won the New York State and New York Empire State titles. Meanwhile, Taylor was 170-10-1 amateur and 2012 Olympic gold medalist, losing in the second round of the 2016 Olympics after getting goodbye in the first round.
Taylor’s only loss was in Chantelle “Elpaux” Cameron in May 2023, winning a rematch in both fights in Dublin, Ireland six months later, ending with a majority decision.
Serrano’s other loss was that Taylor was in Sweden’s Frida “Golden Girl” Wahlberg. Serrano revenges her charm on Ella Bam Bam’ Nunes.
Was this the time of Serrano’s victory, or did Taylor take down her for the third time? This will be Taylor’s 18th title fight. She has been in the US sixth round and met her in Philadelphia in March 2019.
Taylor was very kind to talk to and nice enough to take a photo with me. At just six stops unknown for her powers, she rarely gets into a bad fight. Meanwhile, Serrano, a 31 stop, is known for her strength and has the chance to be a puncher. Fans look forward to supporting their hometown favourite Serrano.
