Spain is more appropriate, says Tome after a penalty breakdown

Spanish coach Montce Tome felt that her side was more fitting after La Roja suffered. England suffers penalty shootout loss in the Euro 2025 final.

The world champion, who defeated England in the 2023 World Cup final, was a favorite to abdicate the Lioness and claim the European title.

And they appeared to be prepared to do it when Mariona Caldenteti moved ahead with Spain with a 25-minute header.

However, Alesia Russo levelled towards England in the 57th minute, and Salina Wigman’s side stuck with the extra time despite the 30 minutes being controlled by Spain.

Spain was paid for failing to count its advantage, and the latter mistake allowed Chloe Kelly to secure the glory of England as Caldente, Aitana Bonmati and Salma Para Laero were unable to convert from 12 yards.

“I think this team is more appropriate. I think we’ve worked so hard for so long to get to this moment. We play against high-level national teams as an event, and what we see in the game makes us think the team deserves it.”

“It’s a sport. You need to know how to lose. Today we missed the penalty.

“We think it was better, but soccer is a sport where the best teams don’t always win. England is a great national team and showed their level during the tournament.

“This is our profession, what we worked, what they worked, what they were working for deserved a different ending.

“So today we feel like we’re about to get to that, but it’s gone. I really value all the work. I wrote history throughout the tournament. The team was good.”
