LAFC and Cherundolo will be a disaster for Gio Reyna, says former USMNT star Eric Wynalda
Former United States striker Eric Winalda says that Gio Reyna’s return to major league football will be a disaster for the national team due to the lack of fierce domestic competition.
Reyna’s future at Borussia Dortmund is uncertain after another injury-plagued season that limited him to just 341 minutes at Bundesliga.
The Italian side’s move to Parma failed to make it happen, prompting him to suggest that he could return to the US and play for LAFC.
According to Winalda, he will alleviate his threat to USMNT, who desperately need the 22-year-old to get his Mojo back ahead of next summer’s World Cup final.
History says playing with MLS is dull competitiveness – Winalda
With his release with Eric Winalda, he said: “I’m worried about Geo Reina. I don’t think it would help to go back to LAFC and play for Steve Cerundro.”
Wynalda points out the fact that MLS had previously tried to revive US International, leading to performance dropouts, saying, “Remember the idea of bringing Michael Bradley home with Toronto’s Jozy Altidore.
“They also returned Clint Dempsey to play in Seattle. They paid him $6 million a year! That was 2014.
“What happened to our national team after three years in the league? We didn’t get the qualifications and you can’t put it together?
“Does Michael Bradley, Dempsey and Josey Altidor understand how to play against Trinidad?
“This is what happens when you’re back and preparing for the World Cup and playing for the MLS. This is what you get. You’re not competitive in the World Cup environment. The end of the story. This is not an opinion. This is a fact.”
Wynalda Slates ‘Boring’ Cherundolo
LAFC also links to Tottenham Captainson Henmin’s move, but Winalda is not sure Cherndoro will make the most of his players.
“Cherundo is someone I’ve known for a long time. He’s boring. He hates the media. He’s not going to urge anyone to do anything before the World Cup,” Winalda said.
“I’m sorry if that hurts your feelings, but he’s not the answer. He’s not the answer as a national team coach, and probably on his way back to Germany.”
