Openai launches learning mode with ChatGPT
Openai announced on Tuesday that it will launch Study Mode. This is a new feature within ChatGPT that aims to help students develop their own critical thinking skills rather than simply getting answers to questions. With Study Mode enabled, ChatGPT asks users questions to test their understanding and in some cases refuse to provide direct answers unless students are involved in the material.
According to Openai, Study Mode has been logging in and logging out users with ChatGpt’s free, Pro and team plans since Tuesday. The company expects to roll out the learning mode to EDU subscribers. This is primarily composed of young people who have purchased plans for all students by school administrators, and will be in the coming weeks.
Learning mode is an attempt to deal with Openai Millions of students using ChatGpt in schools. Research has shown its use ChatGpt can be a useful private tutor For the young people, but also It may hurt their critical thinking skills. A research paper published in June discovered it People writing essays using ChatGpt show low brain activity during the process Compare with people using Google searches or not using anything.
When ChatGpt was first launched in 2022, widespread use in school settings caused fear among educators, leading to the ban on generation AI in many American school districts. By 2023, Some of those schools have abolished their ChatGpt banand teachers across the country agreed to the fact that ChatGpt will become a part of the lives of young people from now on.
Now with the launch of Study Mode, Openai wants to improve ChatGPT as a learning tool, not just a response engine. Humanity has launched a similar tool for the AI chatbot Claude. It is called the learning modeApril.
Of course, there are limitations to how effective the learning mode is. Students can easily switch to the regular ChatGPT mode if they want answers to their questions. Openai’s Vice President of Education Leah Belsky told TechCrunch in a briefing that the company does not provide parents and administrators with the tools to lock students into learning modes. However, Belsky said Openai could explore future management or parental control.
This means that it is necessary for dedicated students to use the learning mode. Children need to really want to learn, not just finish their assignments.
