Abdullah Mason faces late exchange Carlos Ornelas in 10 rounds of matches, aiming for competitor status amid fans’ frustration over matchup quality
Lightweight candidate Abdullah Mason (17-0, 15 KOs) is fighting exchange opponent Carlos “Chineeto” Ornellas (28-4, 15 KOs) in 10th round this Saturday, with event opening times of 5:30pm ET/2:30pm PT, PT, and 10th round. I live in ESPNFrom + Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
The 20-year-old Mason was originally scheduled to compete with his experienced lightweight competitor Giovanni Cabrera, but he retreated due to injuries issues. Top Rank chose Super Featherweight Ornera, a 30-year-old southpaw, as his replacement. Not ideal for Mason. Because Ornelas is not as famous as Cabrera, but he is still a good option.
10 round test
Ornelas went 10 rounds with Rafael Espinoza in 2021 before winning the WBO 126-LB belt.
Boxing fans on social media are not happy to see Abdullah fight another man who doesn’t seem to have been shot in victory or even in competition with him. They want to see Mason take over someone like Andy Cruz, or Raymond Muratara, who called him for the fight this week.
There is no way Top Rank allows Masons anywhere near Cruz or Muratara. Abdullah’s volatile performance against Johann Vazquez on November 8 last year showed that Top Rank needed to move him slowly. Vasquez dropped Mason twice in the first round.
“This step-up fight too. He knows how to move his head and legs. He can punch. He prepares for what he comes,” Abdullah Mason said of his fight against his substituted opponent Ornellas.
Because Ornelas kept his distance at Espinoza, that means he can take a good shot. If they could hang there long enough to test Mason’s fragile chin, they might be able to finish what Johann Vazquez started last November.
I’ll move forward
“This is my first 10th official round. When you step into there on April 5th, you can call me a candidate,” Mason said. Akin Reyes and Barak Bess YouTube channel. “I’m doing pretty good moves (by top rank). Giovanni Cabrera was a good step-up fight, but he’s backed down. After this, I’m probably going to have a co-main like a former champion.
“We’re there. I’m ranked #7 WBC and #10 WBA. So it’s only a matter of time in the next two or three fights before we step into the rankings. Everything else comes with it,” Mason said.
