Airlines launch luxury suites in fierce competition for premium travelers

United and American have announced their upgraded suites and new premium features in May, which will be equipped with fleets to win premium flyers that will significantly contribute to the airline’s revenues. Meanwhile, Delta Airline’s new cabin design, featuring upgraded Delta Premium Select and first-class seats, has been rolling out across the fleet since last fall.
“When it comes to premium suites on planes, it’s a full-on arm race,” Henderson, managing director of the travel website The Points Guy, told Fox Business, adding that all major airlines aim to “assert the mantle of being “the most premium.”

“Airlines recognize that premium travelers are increasingly demanding and are also the most profitable passengers for the airline, so there’s more reason to invest here,” he added.

Not only does this segment offer higher margin sales opportunities compared to economy class, but “demand for business class seats is increasing in conjunction with the growing wealth and the expanding business travel sector,” according to a Growthcatalyst study.
Similarly, “Premium seats, often equipped with cutting-edge amenities, have become a central focus for airlines with the aim of meeting the preferences of high-end customers,” the company said.

The suite has more personal storage space with privacy doors and wireless charging pads. It also comes with a chis lounge seating option with an adjustable headrest pillow.

Customers will receive an amenity kit that includes a multi-course meal curated to pair with wine, luxurious skincare items, and a down blanket and pillow with cool touch fabric on one side and traditional fabric on the other.
Flagship Suite Service customers will also receive prioritized check-in, security, boarding, baggage handling and access to the American flagship lounge with complimentary food and cocktails.
“Every aspect of our new 787-9 is designed to feel inherently premium,” America’s chief customer officer Heather Garboden said in a statement.
Apart from the 787-9 aircraft, the flagship suite seats will be available on newly delivered Airbus A321XLR aircraft and the modified American Boeing 777-300ER.
The Americans said 30 upgraded 787-9 jets will be participating in the Fleet family until 2029. The airline expects to increase seats at Lee Flat and Premium Economy by the end of the decade by 50%.

All United’s future Boeing 787 delivery will receive a United Polaris Studio Suite. First delivery is expected by the end of 2025.
United said its standard business class seating will be upgraded to a suite with sliding doors and a larger 19-inch 4K OLED screen. There were a total of 99 premium seats, claiming the airline was the highest percentage of US carriers.

“As international business continues to expand, especially in emerging economies such as China, India and the Middle East, airlines are investing heavily in business-class upgrades to attract this profitable customer base,” according to a Growthcatalyst study.
Henderson specifically pointed out that US airlines are catching up to competitors like Singapore Airlines, Starlux and Emirates, which have been investing in competitors for years.
