Amazon to send satellite fleets into space step by step and establish internet services

“The initial purpose of the KA-01 mission is to safely deploy all satellites in orbit, meaning they can operate and communicate independently with our team on the ground,” according to the statement. “To do so, once the satellite is successfully separated from the rocket, we begin a series of almost automated procedures to activate the onboard system and use the electric propulsion system to gradually rise into a 392-mile allocated orbit.”
The satellite travels in orbit at speeds of over 17,000 mph, circles the planets about every 90 minutes.

Project Kuiper offers fast, low latency internet for almost every part of the globe.
The satellite system includes more than 3,200 advanced low-Earth orbit satellites, and the company already plans to launch more than 80, according to the statement.
Amazon expects to provide its customers with internet service later this year.

“We have designed some of the most sophisticated communications satellites ever built. Every launch is an opportunity to add capacity and coverage to our network,” Rajeev Badyal, vice president of Project Kuiper, wrote in a statement. “We’ve done extensive testing on the ground to prepare for this first mission, but there are some things we can only learn while flying. This is the first time we’ve flew a final satellite design, and this is the first time we’ve deployed so many satellites at once.”
Badyal added, no matter how the mission unfolds, “This is just the beginning of our journey, and there are all the pieces to learn and adapt as we prepare to launch again and again over and over in the next few years.”

Amazon said the satellite flying the KA-01 is a “significant upgrade” from two prototype satellites tested in October 2023 during the Protoflight mission.
“We’ve improved performance for all systems and boarding types, including step-by-step array antennas, processors, solar arrays, propulsion systems, and optical intersatellite links,” the statement said.

The satellite is also coated with a dielectric mirror film that reflects sunlight and makes it easier for people on the ground to see.
In the next few years, Kuiper and the ULA team will coordinate 38 launches of seven more Atlas Vs and 38 launches with ULA’s larger Vulcan Centaur rockets, according to the statement.

Another 30 MOR MOR MOR MOR will be released across other launch providers, including ArianEspace, Blue Origin and SpaceX.
Following KA-01, Amazon said it will continue to increase production, processing and deployment rates.
Satellite shipments and processing have already begun for the next mission. The KA-02 will be released by Cape Canaveral Space Force Station using the ULA Atlas V Rocket.
