The driving woman initially told agents they were traveling from Arizona to California, but later told authorities they came to the US from Mexico San Luis Entry Port.
A discrepancy in the driver’s story has led to Indio Station’s Border Patrol Agents introducing the vehicle for secondary inspections. This was discovered that the child’s photo and name do not match what is on the ID card.
During the questioning, the agent learned that the girl was not involved with either of the women in the car and that the driver didn’t know his mother.

The little girl was eventually identified as Unaccompanied minors from Mexico, CBP said.
El Centro Sector chief patrol agent Gregory Bovino said the incident was “how child trafficking begins.”
“It’s hardly to bear to think about the heinous crimes that await children who aren’t with their parents,” Bovino said. “The border environment has been hit by this type of activity over the past few years, but the focus has changed and awaits smugglers who will hurt children.”
