Bandwidth and Latency: I chatted with an internet connection expert to understand the difference

What is bandwidth?

What is a delay?

How about ping?

The same speed test used to take a snapshot of your internet connection gives you a ping rate. Look for results under the download count and upload number labeled “ping” or “latency.” For example, I ran an Ookla test on a laptop connected by Wi-Fi T-Mobile 5G Home Internet gateway. In this test, I used a server in the same city as me. I got three ping numbers: 54ms (idle at start of test), 230ms (download test in progress), and 621ms (upload test in progress).
Download and upload a ping to simulate the conditions when the network is in use. If I were a gamer, I would probably shop for a new internet provider. Don’t forget that speed tests are snapshots of your internet connection to a particular device at a particular time. Different results may appear depending on the device, the server that the Speed Test connects to, the time of day, whether it is connected through a wired or wireless network. Bandwidth and Latency: What can I control?
Bandwidth tends to be a more simple factor to control. If available, you can upgrade your Internet plan. For example, I have migrated from a 20Mbps DSL plan to T-Mobile’s Home Internet Service. Here, speed tests may be used to download 100Mbps. It was a notable performance upgrade for my home. If the bandwidth is a sticky point, consider a higher bandwidth plan, or Move to another ISP.
Conlow recommends upgrading your home internet equipment, whether you get gear from your ISP or provide your own gear. “There have been dramatic improvements in Wi-Fi and other technologies that manage latency,” he says. He also suggests that there is no need to move hardwired devices such as televisions and desktop computers. “Wi-Fi itself is the cause of delays, and hardwired makes for faster and more stable connections,” he explains. Finally, don’t be embarrassed to contact your ISP. There may be fixable issues or room at the end of the ISP for improvement.
