Benavidez Sr. blames Canelo Alvarez for turning boxing into “circus” in a skull and Crawford match

Trainer Jose Benavides Sr. roasted in an interview with plans to fight little-known William Skull in Riyadh on May 3, and in an interview with 154-pound belt holder Terence Crawford in Las Vegas on September 13.

Benavidez Sr. says sanctions groups should not allow those fights. Turn sports into “circus.” Jose Sr. feels that Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) can do whatever he wants. He runs away with it.

Jose Sr. believes that Alvarez should have a higher standard and focus on fighting the best man at 168 and 175 rather than fighting a circus-level fight later in his career. Floyd Mayweather Jr. did the same later in his career. So perhaps Canelo learned from him.

“Who is Skull?”

“Skull, what did he accomplish? Who was Skull? We didn’t even know who Skull was,” Jose Benavides Sr. said. Fighting Hub TVdestroying Canelo Alvarez on May 3rd in Riyadh on May 3rd, for a plan to fight lesser-known IBF super middleweight champion William Skull.

Jose Sr. is not the only one who is not familiar with William Skull. Many fans have never seen him fight before, and none were impressed. He was awarded an unanimous 12-round decision on Germany’s Vladimir Sishkin on October 19th last year.

“Terence Crawford, come on. He looked really bad in his final fight (WBA 154-lb champion Isreil Madrimov). He’s up two divisions.

Crawford is not ready to fight in 168 with talent like Canelo. Turki should have been conditioned on Canelo, based on Crawford’s rise of 168 people and defeating two solid fighter jets. That didn’t happen. He has made a lot of money to jump over two divisions from 154 to 168 after an inactive performance against Israil Madrimov last August. Fans are supposed to see Canelo Crawford as a must-see 50-50 matchup, but that’s not the case. Many fans choose not to order unless there is a great undercard for this event.

“So I’ll see two simple fights for him (Canero, 2025). That’s what they want. People allow it, and the organization allows it. So, he’ll continue with it.

There is no way sanctions or committees can stop Canelo from fighting Crawford. The title is not important to that fight. It’s about junk food entertainment with no money and hearts. Only hardcore fans care about the title. This is Canelo, who fights Crawford in a boxer-puncher-type match. Crawford is not a big attraction for hardcore fans as he is not well known to casual fans and has a weak resume. His fighting style is not entertained enough for him to have a wider appeal, as Canelo has.

The decline of boxing?

“Boxing has changed to something that’s not that good, and before, Fernando Vargas was fighting Sugar Shane Mosley.

The sport is heading down the circus route when Floyd Mayweather Jr. broke Rocky Marciano’s record in 2018, fighting 0-0 beginner Conor McGregor in a professional battle approved by the Nevada Commission. From there, the circus is playing with YouTubers entertaining the sport, and Francis Ngannou continues to compete for Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

Canelo has chosen to defend a unified super middleweight title against former 154-pound champion Jermel Charlo, and is currently expected to face Terrence Crawford in September. Even if a fight was not allowed to occur in Nevada, Canelo could find a state or country to sanction it.

“When he was going to fight Caleb plants, they said that Caleb was trying to make him look bad. Booboo was trying to take him to school and show him David Morell from the great Cuban school.

“Here they do the circus and Canelo does whatever he wants. It’s good for him. The organizers allow it. It doesn’t matter what people say. They’re still going to do that.”
