Boxing Results: Mickey Bay destroys Escandon with a brutal return, but still a real threat of light weight
Mickey Bay reminded everyone who wasn’t finished yet. In the main event of Swift Promotions’ “The Future Is Now: Series II” card, the former world champion in Newtown, Pennsylvania, put Oscar Escandon in just three rounds.
Bey (26-3-1, 14 Kos) was loose, fast and trapped. Escandon (27-10, 18 Kos) did not go out. The clean left hook opened the cut early and by the end of round one it was clear who the sharper man was. Bey dropped him at the end of round two, repeating it again midway through the third, forcing referee Eric Dali to shake off at 2:03.
“I didn’t want to hurry up with that,” Bey said afterwards. “I let my body do what I trained.”
He called himself a “time machine” and it actually meant that by fighters who used that nickname at once. The 40-year-old showed that he was still enough for the tank for another famous fight – perhaps two. If you think this is a farewell tour, think about it again.
Garcia flattens another Kuchimenov and Gonzalez cruise, and Rodriguez returns
The care was packed with young and violent talent.
David Garcia, who has already fought like a veteran murderer at age 16, wasted no time. He smiled at MMA’s crossover Marcelino linger and stopped him with a ruthless finish at 2:53 of the first round. In four battles, Garcia already appears to be one of the best prospects in the country.
Kuchimenov? Monster. 5’10” Russian super featherweight walked Dür Olgin in six single-sided rounds. All punches landed as personal. Olgin didn’t answer the bell in round 7.
Elijah “macho” Gonzalez, 18, landed one of the cleanest right hand of the night. He dropped him twice before stopping Codi Chavez in the fourth round. Gonzalez is boxed with bad intentions – the kind that you will notice quickly.
Jonathan Rodriguez has returned for nearly a year and banked eight safe rounds over Jesus Martinez. It’s not spectacular, it’s solid. The 80-72, 80-72, and 79-73 cards reflect total control. He did the job.
Thanjhae Teasley remained undefeated in the dominant six-round sweep of Nelson Morales. The left hook to the body caused most of the damage, but Morales doesn’t fold as usual. The judges gave it to Teasley Clean: 60-54.
Rommel Dunbar Jr. opened the show with a big four-round victory at Denzel Bowlding. A solid debut. Beautiful boxing, good pace and smart body work down the stretch.
