Boxing Results: Olympic gold medalist Andycruz stops Miyanomiya i in round 5, and advances in the lightweight eliminator
2020 Olympic gold medalist Andy Cruz (6-0, 3 KO) was fantastic on Saturday night, shattering Nishino (17-2-1, 6 KO) with his fifth technical knockout at the theatre at Madison Square Garden in New York. Cruz used the power jab throughout the fight to tag Missilo.
In the third round, Cruz opened with his right hand and dropped Mishiro twice. The second knockdown took place in the final seconds of the third. Otherwise, he would have been certainly finished by Cuban talent.
Cruz took the fourth round, mostly jabs, movements and sometimes landing his right hand. Fifth, Andy chases after Mishiro, landing a three-punch combination, staggering him and intervening with the referee to halt the contest. The time was 1:13 in the round.
Mishiro was trying to adapt and show more aggression in rounds 4 and 5, but it wasn’t working. He was being massacred by Cruz in the first three rounds, so it can be said that he was given instructions from his horn to go to the attack. It didn’t work.
Cruz’s performance was the best so far on tonight’s card. It is a master class and shows the skills that other fighters on the matchroom card can dream.
With the victory, Cruise is now the mandatory challenger of IBF lightweight champion Raymond Muratara. It will be interesting to see that fight being ordered soon and the top ranked Muratara promoter attempting to delay this fight. They cannot be excited to have their fighter Muratara defend against a genius like Andy Cruz, as he is on another level in terms of ability.
Muratara is a big puncher, but he is one dimension and fights like a robot. Furthermore, he fights in one gear and does not increase the tempo of his fight. He could be as overmatched as tonight’s Mishiro.
