Canelo’s Cherry Picking Exposure: Why Crawford’s Immediate Title Shot Undermines Boxing’s Equity
Terrence Crawford bypasses the top candidate in the super middleweight division and is given an immediate title shot against incontroversial super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez, brings fairness and deserving issues.
Canelo: Unning cherry picker?
Fighters like David Benavidez have been campaigning for a long time to fight Canelo, and are ignored despite fighting in the same division. It looks bad as Crawford jumps over 14 pounds to give him a fight with Canelo rather than Benavidez.
Canelo considers it a c, calculated cherry picker. He avoids the bigger threat in favor of weak, small, and older fighters like 37-year-old Crawford.
If boxing becomes a sport, fighters must acquire the right to fight the world champions. I don’t see here that Crawford (41-0, 31 Kos) is challenging Canelo (63-2-2, 39 KOs) by raising two weight classes.
Parallel Broner’s title
Crawford has passed four divisions to win world titles, but the opposition he fought to win those titles is less than the best. He defeated Errol Spence in 147, but many believe that when that fight occurs he is the shell of his former self.
In many ways, Terence’s four-part championships reflect that of Adrien’s ‘The Problem’ Broner. AB ran through the weight class to capture left and right belts in the same strategic way as Crawford.
Bad’s unfair “megafight”
Crawford says he chose Canelo because he missed out on all the “mega fights” he got against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cott and Jennady Golovkin. So this is his “Mega Fight.”
But that doesn’t mean he deserves to give a mega fight, as he is the one who chose to compete in the 135, 140, and 147 divisions. These fighters were still prime numbers for most of Crawford’s career from 2008 to 2018.
Crawford’s past enemy
1. Lightweight (135)
2. Light welterweight (140)
- Vacant WBO’s Thomas Drolme
- Viktor Postol from WBC
- Julius Indonesia for IBF and WBA
3. Welterweight (147)
- Jeff Horn of WBO
- Error Spence for IBF, WBA, and WBC
4. Junior middle class (154)
If you look closely at Fighters Crawford Beat, his resume is mediocre and not something simple fans believe in. When they hear that Crawford is the previous two divisions and the four division world champion, they think that means he defeated a huge opposition. His records show that. It reveals the opposite.
“He wanted Canelo because he’s a great fighter. He’s fighting (Miguel) Cott, (Floyd) Mayweather and GGG (Jenna DiGolovkin).
