Celtic v Newcastle: lineup, statistics, preview

Preview of Celtic v Newcastle

Anthony Elanga is scheduled to make his debut at Newcastle at Celtic ahead of the season tomorrow.

Winger Elanga joined Newcastle from Nottingham Forest last week for £55 million but was not featured in a hurry after beating Carlisle 4-0 in a closed door crash on Saturday.

However, he will become part of the team that will fly directly to Glasgow for tomorrow’s match from the club’s training camp in the Austrian Alps.

Boss Eddie Howe said of his new recruit:

“I know he already knows a lot of groups, so I think he is at home in connection with those individuals, whether it’s from international or not.

“He shows his pace and athleticism, and it was a very impressive start as this is a real weapon to add to other players who have those similar qualities to others.”

Howe has worked hard this week with his players and admits they are likely tired when they play against the Scottish champions.

He added to Nutv:

“Perhaps they’ll listen a little to the game, but they hope to produce good performances in front of passionate home support.

“If you look at preseason games, all of the games are tests, because Carlisle was two weeks away in fitness, so it was a test.

“It was a really good job in our first game, and this is a big step for the opposite level.

Alexander Isaac, the subject of many speculations this week, will sooner or later join the Austrian team, and will likely start on the bench.

Celtic will start the domestic league on August 2nd and will start against St. Mirren a day later, but the domestic league kicks off, with more pre-season preparations ahead.

They were an impressive 2-0 winner against Sports CP at Faro on Wednesday night.

Boss Brendan Rogers told Celtic TV:

“Overall, I thought it was a really good performance against a really good team, and it’s a difficult system for them to play.

“Tactically, we were excellent in the game amidst pressure and press, and in our play some of our football was great.

“We scored two goals and we could have scored more, but playing with that confidence was great and we performed well.

“It was a very good workout for us and it ended in an incredible week.”
