Colorado Honeymooner dies after a rare lightning strike at Florida Beach

Volusia County Beach Safety Confirmed by WTVG The victim, a 29-year-old man, had visited Colorado with his new bride when he was struck by lightning while standing in the ankle-deep water on Friday afternoon.
The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later died of injuries, Tammy Malfer, the director of safety for Borussia County Beach, shared the latest updates. Monday at WESH.
Malfer told the outlet that the storm was still miles away from the beach, and the strike became “a very rare event.”

“It was a blue sky and the storm was like miles away from us,” an eyewitness explained to Wesh.
Volsia County Mike Chitwood tackled the tragedy and also confirmed that the victim was a tourist on his honeymoon.
“I apologize for the tragic death of a young man on my honeymoon with my wife here,” Chitwood wrote in a Facebook post.

“At the age of 29, he should have spent more anniversary with her for years to come. On behalf of all of us who wanted the hard work of our lifeguards, EMS team and ER staff to bring him back, I expressed my sincere sadness to this young woman.
City officials confirmed to WTVG that two other people were “indirectly struck” by lightning New Smyrna Beach on friday.
Both victims reportedly were playing golf at the Venetian Bay Golf Course when they were hit. However, the outlet said both people had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

So far, at least three lightning-related deaths have been held in 2025 in North Carolina, Mississippi and Texas. According to the National Weather Service.
Fox News Digital contacted the offices of Volusia County Beach Safety and Volusia County Sheriff for comments, but did not receive an immediate response.
