Cryptographic VCs were once exotic species, but are now part of the technological ecosystem
Happy Friday Everyone, that’s a pinch hit by finance editor Jeff Roberts for Ally. Ever since moving to Southern California two years ago, I have been impressed by the region’s thriving venture capital scene. This appears to fly under the media radar compared to Silicon Valley and New York. I recently spoke with longtime Sheen veteran Adam Winnick.
Winnick is a vibrant man and has a very important VC quality that can bring up influential people. I first met him last month at a dinner party for a member of Medici Network, an institutional investor conference focused on encryption. This brought everyone from startup founders to bankers to Ivy League donations and sovereign wealth fund representatives.
Dinner was held at Avra in Beverly Hills. Participating in some of these things was one of the things I noticed: it comes from excellent Mediterranean cuisine, how normal it felt. There was a time when everyone at Crypto events saw themselves as outsiders, and the VC industry saw Crypto Venture capitalists as different breeds in different games.
I don’t know that’s the case anymore. Crypto Investing now feels like another stream of venture capital, but there are some obvious differences that remain, especially when it comes to receiving payments. Unlike traditional models where VCs acquire bushel stakes from startups and wait seven years, the Crypto VC world is more fluid, revolving around tokens rather than stock. (If you want to see it carefully, check this Deep Diving (On topics by Leo).
In the early days, the combination of cryptography and venture capital caused quite awful behavior. VCS fills the bag with tokens tied to a half-baking project before dumping it into a retail investor. However, adoption during the more stringent lockup periods has recently curtailed some of the worst abuses, and the expected arrival of clear regulations should be further improved.
For him, Winnick is a huge supporter of the token model. “This is a powerful incentive mechanism for bootstrapping network effects. Just because people today misuse them early or don’t know what to do doesn’t mean they won’t be used in the future,” he says.
As Winnick predicts, if the world of traditional technology and crypto is approaching, tokens could become a more general feature in VC landscapes. If this convergence is actually happening, Winnick says the winner will be someone who can understand how to combine the so-called Web2 mature technology stack and wide business network with the highly technical and capital-intensive dynamics of Web3.
Former banker Winnick and his co-founder Kamel Mokeddem appear to be cracking the code for Crypto Investing by former Oracle executive Kamel Mokeddem. At the end of last year, the company’s final partner’s IRR was 69%, boasting Series A Series A investment. Meanwhile, the fund’s second vehicle liquid fund has increased 12% this year, although early on, as many other funds are imposing flat or negative returns in the first part of 2025.
Finality Partners have been warned by Crypto VC world giants like the A16Z and Haun Ventures, but the traction they gained suggests they have found their own lane.
As always, the term sheet wants to hear what you think. Do you think the world of cryptography and traditional VCs are coming together? And finally, reading this column, I came across a business reporter in New York. explained The LA venture capital scene is more “passive aggressive.” impartial?
Let’s meet,
