However, Oz’s claim that he had not received a fee to promote the product did not convince Hassan. Hassan pointed to a report documenting “Dr. Oz Effect,” a phenomenon that surges after sales of his approved products were featured on his show.

“It was written by the press,” Oz told Hassan. Hassan then argued that Oz “will not be accountable for (his) promotion in snake oil treatment.”

Financial connections with many companies across many corners of Oz Healthcare sector, Including dietary supplements was a point of scrutiny for his detractors. In an ethical submission filed prior to the hearing, Oz indicated that he would sell his holdings in more than 70 companies and investment funds that could potentially lead to conflicts of interest.

One of those companies is Iherb, an online supplement retailer representing one of OZ’s biggest financial holdings. According to his ethics submission, Iherb’s Oz holding is worth $25 million.

As the CMS administrator, OZ will make decisions related to how the government covers the procedures, the hospital will stay and medicine Federal healthcare programs and reimbursement rate providers are paid for services. If confirmed, OZ could theoretically obtain federal healthcare programs such as Medicaid and Medicare and cover many supplements that have not yet been covered.
