Dirty Holocaust murals find new homes at Shore Museum in Rome
The Shore Museum in Rome acquired the work by reserved contemporary pop artist Alexandro Palombo after being tampered as is apparently Anti-Semitism acts.
The mural depicting Auschwitz’s last two Italian survivors, Liliana Segure and Sami Modiano, has been tainted and erased by the destroyers.
Segre and Modiano appear on striped clothing underneath David’s green bulletproof vest with yellow stars, and even have a representation of serial numbers tattooed on them by the Nazis. The assailant destroyed Segure and Modiano’s faces and stars in the chest, but the numbers on his arm remained untouched.
“They took my face, my identity, they erased the yellow stars, but they left a number of tattooed on my arms,” Segure said.

Palombo ultimately recreated this work and is now part of the museum’s permanent collection.
“Art is the best expression of freedom, and how repeatedly attacking works depicting two Auschwitz survivors is how all the values of democracy and our freedom are dangerous. It emphasizes whether they are exposed to the subject,” Palombo said in a statement. “The gestures of courage and resistance of the Shore Museum in Rome and the Italian Jewish community are a wonderful and valuable lesson in civilization for all of us, and he responded. Anti-Semitic violence and hatred of these new forms of social and cultural terrorism, accompanied by the powerful actions of Lisorgiment. ”
Palombo has produced several works honoring the Holocaust, and his others have not been spared from vandalism.
Hungarian author and Holocaust survivor Edith Brook is no longer in the work entitled “Arbeit Macht Frei,” wrapped in Israeli flags, and many of the flags have been erased. The title of this mural is the same phrase that the Nazis placed at the gates of Auschwitz, translated as “Work will free you.”
Brook told an Italian newspaper printing She was sad, but was not surprised by the vandalism, saying, “Anti-Semitism is a tsunami.”
Bruck’s mural was also bought by the Shoah Museum in Rome.

Another piece of Palombo that was destroyed was entitled “Halt! Stoj!” This portrayed Segure, Modiano and Burke along with Pope Francis. Four are portrayed as characters from the Simpsons, a common motif in Palombo. The Pope’s image was undamaged, but the destroyers tainted the Star of David with three Holocaust survivors.

A contemporary pop artist and activist, Parombo used pop culture references in his artwork, including the Simpsons and Disney celebrities and cartoon characters. One of his most iconic works is “The Simpsons Deported to Auschwitz.” This shows Marge, Homer, Maggie, Burt and Lisa before and after the concentration camp, indicating that the debilitating state of Holocaust survivors has been released from the Nazi camp.
