DJI has a new 360 camera you don’t have (yet?)
Best known for its drones, gimbals and action cameras, DJI is releasing its first release 360 CameraOSMO 360. It has some impressive specs with a big 1-inch sensor, 8K video per 50 frames, and 120 megapixel photos.
The 360 camera market is certainly not crowded. Insta360 is the biggest name, followed by Kandao and GoPro, which are refreshed but aged Max. The OSMO 360 looks interesting on paper, but there are small wrinkles that are not available in the US for now. The reason is unknown.
specification
- 1 inch 360 degree imaging
- 8k50 360 Video
- 5K60 16×9 “Flat” Video
- 120 megapixel photos
- 105 GB of built-in storage
The OSMO 360’s heading specification is “1 inch 360 degree imaging.” This isn’t the first 360 camera with a 1-inch sensor, but it’s a marketing hedge, as what DJI is doing is a bit more interesting than that.
The OSMO 360 uses a square image sensor rather than a regular rectangular sensor. All lenses, 360 camera lenses are included, so the angular image sensor has fewer unused pixels (i.e. the side of the rectangular image sensor) as it focuses the circular image on the sensor. This has theoretical advantages in terms of cost, size and power consumption. According to DJI, this is a custom square image sensor with 4K x 4K resolution.
Each chip actually measures 1/1.1 inch, so technically it’s slightly smaller than 1 inch, but it’s in the largest camera ever. DJI says the pixel itself is 2.4μm – about the same size as the current pick of the best 360 camera, Insta360 x5the 1/1.28 inch sensor has a small pixel size and a 2.44μm pixel size (but hedges by saying it’s the “max pixel size”).
Anyway, the OSMO 360 sensors are big in the category. According to DJI, the sensor has a dynamic range of 13.5 stops, which is also what the Insta360 says on the X5. In my tests, the X5 does great things in high dynamic distance scenes and in low light. The OSMO 360 has a slightly faster F1.9 lens versus the X5’s F2.0, so performance should be suitable for low light cases. Also, DJI’s OSMO Action 5 Pro is our low-light action cam champion.
The video and photos specs are impressive. The OSMO 360 maximizes at 8K resolution at 50 frames per second. Insta360 x5 It can do 8k, but 30fps is low. This means that the movement can be a little smoother, and the blur of the moving object is too blurry or the footage can be slightly slower due to slow motion. If you want to slower down even further, the OSMO 360 also offers a 4K100.
The 120 megapixel still image is simply huge. flat QOOCAM 3 Ultra in Kandaoour current choice 360 cameras that are ideal for image quality“Just” 96 Megapixels is the biggest. So, in theory, the OSMO 360 will provide even more detailed images, allowing you to zoom in and crop tighter.
Overheating is a problem with high resolution 360 cameras when recording video, and DJI says the OSMO 360 can record 8K30 for up to 100 minutes. That’s great, but it’s 7 minutes longer than the Insta360 x5 can do. The optional Selfie Stick expansion rod with an integrated battery can extend recording time to 180 minutes. The OSMO 360 also charges quickly, reaching 50% capacity in 12 minutes.
The OSMO 360 has 105GB of internal storage, but no removable storage is mentioned. With these high-resolution video and photo files, that storage fills up quickly.
Finally, there is weight. According to DJI, the OSMO 360 weighs only 183 grams. This makes it even lighter than the Insta360 x5 and significantly lighter than the Kandao Qoocam 3 Ultra. For cameras designed to replace traditional ones Action Camerathat’s great.
availability
Since first competing in the market over a decade ago, he has been reviewing using 360 cameras. OSMO 360 checks many of the “interesting new camera” boxes. It is lightweight, looks like a decent size and features a large image sensor to improve low light performance. The resolution and frame rate of that video and image moves the needle upwards compared to previous generations. In my experience with DJI action cameras, the company typically does better work in image quality in a variety of environments than GoPro or Insta360.
Except for one problem, except for what interests. It is not available in the US “via the official DJI channel” and there is no estimated date for DJI to have OSMO 360 available. When I asked DJI to clarify, they answered. “As the local situation and industry environment have evolved, we have had to adjust our market strategy. We don’t have a timeline on when or if this will be available, but we will continue to post any updates.”
DJI has pricing for us at least for now. The OSMO 360 will theoretically cost $550 for a standard combo. This comes with a rubber lens projector. This costs $700 for an adventure combo that includes selfie sticks, adapter mounts and other accessories. This will have the same range as the X5 and QOOCAM 3 Ultra.
