Eddie Hearn is unsure that Callum Smith is fighting Benavides
Promoter Eddie Hearn says it still has to decide whether Callum Smith will fight WBC Light Heavyweight Champion David Benavidez or next defend the WBO interim belt.
Hearn says Smith (31-2, 22 Kos) wants to be two-division world champions, but has a “easy touch” while taking on IBF, WBA and WBO champions Dmitry Bivol or Benavidez.
Benavides or Vibor?
The way Hearn is talking sounds uncertain whether Smith will fight Benavides (30-0, 24 Kos). That makes sense. It will likely be less payday for Kalum and his chances of victory will be less than if he had fought Biboru. We have already seen how good Benavidez is in fighting the Big Puncher before.
Bivol: vulnerable to pressure
In contrast, the 34-year-old Bivol showed vulnerability to pressure in two battles with Artur Beterbiev. He won a rematch with Beterbiev last February, but he appeared to collapse in the early and late rounds where he was under non-stop pressure.
Smith does the same with Biboru (24-1, 12 KOs), but he doesn’t release the way Beterviev did in the second half. He continued to put strong pressure on the Dmitry, wearing him with a hard punch. If you’re Smith, that’s going to be the better direction you should go. A fight with Benavides would be a bad idea.
“I think there’s a possibility in that fight. Callum now has to defend that interim (WBO light heavyweight) world title or fight David Benavides,” Eddie Hearn said. Boxing News When asked about a potential battle between Callum Smith and David Benavidez.
That’s a difficult decision, Smith has. He is in a fight with Benavides and has a nice payday there if he wants, but his chances of victory are not good. As long as money doesn’t leave this world, he should wait for the winner of the Bivol vs. Beterbiev III trilogy.
Smith: 2 divisions of championship goals
“The key to Callum is to be a two-division world champion. It’s a very difficult job because you have David Benavidez and Dmitry Biboll. There’s no easy touch. He knows that.
