Musk vs. Open
The filing is part of a continuing incident by Musk against Sam Altman and Openry.
Musk, co-founder of Openai, accused his former colleague of betraying the company’s mission to establish artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity. In a lawsuit filed in San Francisco, Musk alleges that Openai has effectively become a “closed sauce” arm Microsoftprioritizes the public interest.
Musk’s claims against OpenaI include breach of contract, breach of fiduciary obligations and unfair business practices. His requests include asking the company to return to open source and an injunction to prevent Openai executives from profiting from AGI.
The filing argues that Openai’s latest model, GPT-4, may be recognized as artificial general information, and that its design remains secret for commercial profits.
“The internal details of the GPT-4 are only Openai, and are known to Microsoft based on information and beliefs. Therefore, GPT-4 is the opposite of ‘open AI’,” Musk said in the lawsuit. “And that’s been closed for reasonable commercial reasons. Microsoft is running for building good fortune to sell GPT-4 to the public. This is not possible even if it allows technology that is generally freely available, as Openai needs to do.”
Musk, who has donated more than $44 million to a nonprofit, claims his support is twisted to serve a $80 billion-profit venture.
“Imagine giving to a nonprofit organization that the alleged mission is to protect the protection Amazon Rainforests, but nonprofits, will create a for-profit Amazon logging company that uses donation results to clear the rainforest,” Musk said in the lawsuit.
