Emiliano Vargas Vs. Ernesto Mercado: Social Media Feud ignites light welterweight division

Famous Fernando Vargas son Emiliano (15-0, 13 KOs) has paid much attention thanks to his top-ranked promoters, accusing Mercado (17-0, 16 KOs) of jealous of receiving attention from fans and media.

Ideally, Emiliano agrees to fight Ernesto Mercado and can calm the beef in the ring. Top Rank probably won’t take that opportunity. Emiliano is the future money maker, grooming him like Edgar Berlanga, and is currently working with Xander Zayas. This means there is no tough battle for Vargas where results are not guaranteed 100% in advance.

Amateur Credentials: Mercado Edge

Vargas, 21, said people don’t know who the 23-year-old Matchroom’s promoted “Tito” Mercado is and by fighting him, that’s the only way fans can learn about him. In a way, Emiliano is right. Mercado is not given the same huge promotional push from Eddie Hearn, given to Emiliano by his promoter Eddie Hearn.

Hahn has so many big names on the Matchroom roster that he doesn’t have time to promote them the same way that Top Rank does with Emiliano Vargas. Ernesto Mercado is an incredible talent and has a much better amateur qualification than Vargas, but Hahn hasn’t given him the same promotional push.

The same is true of the 2020 Olympic gold medalist Andycruz. He is also advertised in Matchroom. Cruz is widely regarded by many as the best fighter in the lightweight division, and is a much better talent than Shakur Stephenson. Hearn rarely mentions Andy. Hahn has too many talented fighters, and he is the main guy who talks about everything in the matchroom.

Mercado has better talent and basics, which could destroy Emiliano. Vargas is like a chip from an old block fighting like his father Fernando. If the top rank matches a good person in the future, he will be exposed.
