European leaders worry that they are too dependent on US technology
The European government may be reconsidering the use of American technologies and services. New York Times report.
The Flashpoint appears to have come after President Donald Trump approved ICC’s decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Joab Gallant.
In response, Microsoft has turned off Khan’s email address. Casper Klinge, a former diplomat who also worked at Microsoft, told NYT that Microsoft’s actions were “a smoking gun that many Europeans were looking for,” and they were pushing them. Look at alternative options. (For example, some ICC workers reportedly switched to Swiss Email Service Proton.)
“If the US administration is chasing a particular organization, country, or individual, fear is obliged to comply with American companies,” Klinge said.
Microsoft has since made policy changes to protect customers in a similar situation, saying it did not close the email accounts of the four ICC judges approved by Trump earlier this month. Additionally, this week, CEO Satya Nadella announced a new “sovereign solutions” to protect European institutions.
