Former Liverpool defender Jones dies at age 70

Former Liverpool and Wales defender Joey Jones passed away at the age of 70.

Jones played 100 times for Liverpool between 1975 and 1978, winning two European Cups, the UEFA Cup and league titles.

The left back also scored 72 caps in Wales and began and ended his career with Wrexham after spells at Anfield, Chelsea and Huddersfield.

Jones’ former Welsh teammate Mickey Thomas posted on X: “This morning I lost my best friend and soulmate.

Jones’ contribution to Liverpool said, “Joey ate frog feet and made Swiss rolls. He’s now munching on the Gladbach banner revealed by fans in the final European Cup victory over Borussia Monche Gladbach of the 1977 European Cup.

The banner was associated with quarterly St. Etienne and Zurich and semi-final victory.

Along with Wrexham, Jones won the Welsh Cup and helped the club reach the FA Cup quarterfinals in 1974.

A post from X’s club reads as follows: “Wrexham AFC is devastated to learn to pass the club legend Joey Jones. True club legends are greatly missed by everyone who knows him on and off the pitch, for everyone he meets.”

There were also tributes on the X from former Liverpool stars Jamie Carrager and John Aldridge and Noel Mooney, CEO of the Welsh Football Association.

Aldridge writes: “What a lovely man, what a lovely man, with his heart and soul in a red shirt, and for all the clubs he played, what a lovely man, our idea is with Joey’s family!
