To this day, one of the key factors hindering the unity of Gaza councils is the exploitation of the situation there by Moscow and Beijing. Given the sustained council division over the war in Gaza, some UN member states continue to build diplomatic predicates for future General Assembly resolutions (non-bidirectional detention) calling for sanctions, arms embargoes and other harsh international measures against Israel.

The recent US veto of another council resolution on Gaza certainly fuels those efforts. As I write, the Palestinians and their allies continue to reflect on additional pathways to chase Israel throughout the UN system. There has even been debate in several UN circles about halting Israel’s right to vote at the general assembly. This is an act that deeply offends Washington and causes serious political consequences against the United Nations.

Since the beginning of this tragic conflict, I have been mystified as to why many UN officials have instructed Israel to end Hamas’ pursuit, and then believe that in some way the magical end of the battle will come to fruition.

On their part, I feel seriously opposed to treat Israel as a legitimate nation with its own national security concerns. The United States certainly has an influence on Israel, but it is naive at best to think that these colleagues can simply instruct Jerusalem what to do in response to what it perceives as a real threat.

Russia and China must end the politicization of Gaza and contribute constructively to peace efforts or simply out of the way.

Misguided pressure on the US, merciless efforts to isolate Israel, Russia and China’s misappropriation tactics, bold Anti-Semitism, And the reluctance of some states to compromise continues to hamper the Security Council’s ability to speak in one voice to end the Gaza War. Until these unfortunate practices cease, the Council will remain unrelated to Gaza and the broader Israeli-Palestinian resolutions.

No one can ignore the horrifying tragedy of Gaza today, but it remains the fact that the UN member states affecting Hamas have made a strategic decision not to use it.
