What is AI Search in Google Photos?

The photo is a photo Google’s new AI-powered search Tools in Google Photos. Instead of entering simple keywords and scrolling endlessly, you can ask complicated questions. Some examples are “Show me the best photos of each national park I’ve visited” or “What did you eat on your trip to Italy?” AI understands the context, date, location, and even themes so you can find exactly what you’re looking for.

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Question How do photos work?

The photos use Gemini AI models specifically designed to understand the content and context of images. When asking questions, Gemini analyzes your photos and sees the location, people, and even the quality of each shot. For example, when you ask for the best birthday party photos, you can identify the theme of the party and highlight your favorite moments.

You can ask photos for both simple and complex searches.

  • Simple: “Show me a picture of my dog.”
  • Complex: “When I found all the photos from 2025 and my hair was short.”
  • context: “Remember the theme we had for Lena’s birthday party.”

What’s new and improved?

After pausing the rollout earlier this year to address speed and quality issues, Google has resumed and expanded its photos to more users in the US now. AskPhotos streamlines your search experience by displaying classic search results on one page along with Gemini AI results. Simple searches such as “cat” and “nature” provide immediate results, but complex queries will give you faster and more accurate answers. If you prefer classic search, you can opt out of your photos at any time by visiting the app’s settings and toggling the “Search in Ask Photos” feature. This flexibility allows you to search for the methods you want.

Availability and privacy

Beyond early access testers, photos will be deployed to more eligible users in the US. Requirements include being over 18 years old, using English (us) as your account language and enabling Face Groups. Google has confirmed that private photos remain untouched by ads and that they can only check certain queries to improve their services. Unless you contact support, your answers will remain private.
