Google uses AI tools to aim for Duolingo and help you learn new languages
Google is debuting three new AI experiments aimed at helping users learn foreign languages in foreign languages. This tool utilizes Google’s Gemini major language model to identify objects and situations in your direct environment and provide translations that help users seek help. It will cause a conversation.

Small lesson: Explain the situation
Google’s new little lesson tool allows users to explain the situation they are in to learn vocabulary and grammar that helps explain the problem to local people. Using the provided context, this tool provides suggestions to help users understand how to seek help if they are not learning a specific phrase tailored to their current problem.
Slang Hang: Casual Talk
The Slang Hang Tool promotes casual conversations around stringent sentence structures and grammatical agreements, and encourages users to teach them how to drop procedures and adapt colloquial ways to speak foreign languages. Slang Hang simulates conversations between native speakers, allowing users to discover what words and phrases in a series of messages mean. WordCam: Detects items in a photo
The third and final new tool, Word Cam, uses Gemini to detect objects in photos you take. This feature helps explain the world around you, but it may not be possible to accurately label all objects in photos taken by Gemini. While using Word Cam, it is worth double checking the translations provided against another source.
Language learning experiments were created as a way to “inspire developers using Gemini to build a variety of use cases and experiences.”
This particular series of experiments aims to focus on using multimodal LLM as a way to promote bite-sized lessons on the go.
New features from Google have not yet been launched in all languages at least. Small Lessons, Slang Hang, WordCam currently supports translation in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish languages.
Shiels said, like other Google Labs experiments, the small lesson, Slang Hang and Word Cam, are not products and are not permanent features.
“This is a limited time tool that will eventually lead to sunset,” she told CNET. “I hope the developers are having fun playing around.”
