Hall of Fame and Chicago Cubs The legendary Ryne Sandberg died after a long battle with cancer, MLB announced Monday night.
Sandberg was 65 years old.

“The second baseman of the beloved Cubs was a five-tool model from the 1980s to the early 90s, creating 10 consecutive All-Star teams and winning the 9 Straight Gold Globe Award.”
“In great sadness, we share that Ryne Sandberg passed away today,” the Cubs wrote in X’s statement with a photo of “Ryno.”

Sandberg was named league MVP during the 1984 season, playing a league-leading 8.5 war, but led the way in Run (114) and Triple (19). He cut .314/.367/.520 that year with 36 doubles in 156 games, 19 Homer and 84 RBI.
MLB’s homage to Sandberg included a performance called “The Sandberg Game” on June 23, 1984.

“On June 23, 1984, national television audiences watched Sandberg hit a game-tying home run in the ninth and 10 innings of the Cardinals Closer and future Hall of Fame Blues Sutter.
Sandberg made his debut with Philadelphia PhilliesThe team drafted him in the 20th round of the 1978 amateur draft at North Central High School in Spokane, Washington in 1981. Although he quickly moved to the Cubs the following season, Sandberg returned to manage some of the Phillies for three seasons.
However, Sandberg’s legacy at Diamond is on the north side of Windy City, where he reached .285/.344/.452 with 282 homers and 2,151 hits over 15 seasons with the Cubs. Apart from his stellar defense, Sandberg won seven Silver Slugger Awards and won the Home Run Derby.

“On June 23, 2024, the 340th anniversary of his iconic moment, the Cubs unveiled a statue of Sandberg outside Wrigley Field,” the MLB statement continued.
Sandberg was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005.
