Hampton opens on tragic losses before Euro 2025
England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton shared that her grandfather passed away just two days before the tournament began, revealing the personal heartache she carried through Euro 2025.
The 24-year-old Chelsea star played a pivotal role in the success of the Lioness, generating two important saves in penalty shootouts, defeating 3-1 in the final after England finished a 1-1 draw.
Her heroic display won her a match-winning player and concluded her outstanding campaign.
On Monday, Hampton posted a photo of his Green England shirt on Instagram. Her Green England shirt shared an emotional tribute with “grandpa” written inside her collar.
“Dear Grandpa. Two days before the biggest tournament of my life, you left.
“It’s not real yet. When I called Nanny I had you say your voice, one of your jokes, or you managed to say it all and say it all.
“You were one of my biggest supporters. You believed in me before you knew what this journey would look like. You were always there. You looked, encouraged, taught me. You taught me a lot, not just about soccer, but about life.
“I miss our chat. I miss being told, ‘Only our athletes understand.’ You were always grinning a little at something special. You were. You got it.
“It breaks my heart to not be able to see you leave for our country in my first major tournament. We’ve spoken many times over what you dreamed of for me.
“But deep, you were still there. I felt you with me. On the tunnel. On the pitch. In a tough moment, I heard you in my head when I needed strength. I’m proud of my granddad.”
