How it works

Earthquakes start with fast and subtle things p-wave. These are early rumors that most people don’t feel at all. However, a mobile phone accelerometer (YEP, the same sensor as when turning a mobile phone sideways) can detect those waves.

When sufficient Android phones in the same area feel the same movement, Google’s System Kick in and send early alerts to people who are about to be attacked by people who are stronger and slower S-Waves. They are what causes damage.

This gives you a 15-60 second warning. We don’t have much time, but it’s enough to get away from the window, duck under the desk, or stop climbing that ladder. Seconds are important when the ground is rolling.

This is not merely theoretical

According to research ScienceAndroid-based earthquake detection network has acquired over 11,000 real earthquakes between 2021 and 2024.

It covers 98 countries and pushes out approximately 18 million alerts a month.

In some cases, people would notify me for more than a minute before the shaking began. And false report? A total of three across over 1,300 confirmed events. Try getting those odds from the weather app. It’s incredible for the free features hidden in your phone.
