Hundreds of Delta passengers spend the night at Tarmac, Alabama for the weather


Nearly 300 Delta Line passengers experienced a night of confusion and delays after bad weather forced two international flights to regional airports without customs.

The two delta flights departing from Mexico last Thursday for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport did not reach their destination until the next day, according to the airline.

Instead, from the 1828 flight and flight 599 from Cabo San Lucas Mexico City A Delta spokesperson said it landed at Alabama’s Montgomery Regional Airport as a detour around 9:30pm, a FOX Business statement.

“The flight crew has always aimed to ensure the safety of all Delta customers and people, and they have chosen to bypass Montgomery, Alabama (MGM) and planned to continue to Atlanta after the bad weather cleared,” the statement said.

The regional airport does not have a US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility, so travelers were unable to disembark the plane and were stuck on the plane overnight.

“Flights from international origin must arrive at airport customs and border security personnel and processing facilities, which was not possible until early Friday morning when special accommodations were reached. Montgomery Airport official CBP,” the spokesman said.

Other airports with CBP facilities were nearby, but were not out of reach due to the weather.

“Birmingham Shuttlesworth International AirportAdditionally, experiencing serious thunderstorms was not suitable as a detour airport due to the environment and Windshire reporting,” the spokesman continued.

Passengers were sitting on the plane until around 5:30am, when special CBP arrangements arrived. Travelers were eventually allowed to enter the airport before departing for Atlanta around noon.

The airline said it plans to refund tickets for each customer as a result of the inconvenience.

“We sincerely apologize to our customers for this experience, and we have come to our goal of serving and caring for our customers amidst thunderstorms in the southeastern region on Thursday night. We reach out to each customer with a full refund on our booking,” the spokesman said.

The airline also said it will work to sort out delays that will affect this type of weather in the future.
