I have to have three different cameras that I learned about all photographers
I have been a professional photographer for over 10 years and have photographed everything from Edited Photo Story, Product Photo And scenery, travel, Street photos of my personal work. At that time I learned that there are three main things Camera type What all photographers need to own. And I’m not talking about brands like Sony or Canon, such as the types of sensors like Full Frame or APS. Deeper Level of Camera Selection – The type of camera that offers a fundamentally different way to take photos and allows you to create your best work no matter what genre you want to dabble in.
These types can also be three physically different cameras, but can also be expressed with two cameras, or just one. I’ll explain it, so let’s jump in with the number one camera type.
Main horse
This is a camera that gets things done. It’s probably packed with the latest camera technology. It’s fast to use, shoot at high speed, lightning autofocus, and perhaps image stabilization, and uses a replacement lens almost certainly. It could be the perfect frame. Cameras are used all over the world for all kinds of photography – As I have – From weddings to cars, pet products, anything. It’s all trade cameras you can trust and will do whatever you need when and when you need it to do it.
I used the Canon R5 in numerous professional shoots for photography and video. It’s a high performance all-around product.
For me now, it’s the Canon R5. Fast, high resolution. Lots of features. Flippy screen. And it shoots great videos. Infinite lens and accessory options. It’s a camera I trust in most of my professional work. Because I know it can be delivered and I know it can be delivered when I’m using it. Previously it was a Canon 5div, but before that it was a Canon 6D. For you, it could be a Sony A7RV, Nikon Z8, or Panasonic Lumix S5II.
It may not be the latest model around, but whether it was launched in 2025 or 2005, check all the boxes you need for a busy day of busy photos, whether you’re a professional or an avid amateur. The craftsman is the camera that does everything and it will work. But it’s probably very large and probably very expensive. It’s great to have so many lenses to choose from, but sometimes you don’t want the burden of choosing. That’s when you need it…
Compact fixed lens cameras like Fujifilm’s X100VI are always ready to shoot.
Daily Carry
It’s a little digital. a Compact points and shootideally. It’s almost certainly a fixed lens. Fuji x 100vi Or ricoh griii. Even relatively old Sony RX1R Or Leica Q3. Q3 is not that small, but in reality I love my Q343 as a daily carry. This is a type of camera that you can grab right away when you rush out without thinking about the lens. When you don’t want a backpack full of gear when camping, but you want plenty of fun shots of you and your buddies around the campfire. It’s a camera you can carry anytime. It’s a social camera that doesn’t bother you to get into the chaos of life. It can even be viable even if it’s your phone’s camera.

What you own is probably the lightest camera, which you can wear comfortably around your neck while walking down the streets of an old Italian town. Light comes in beautifully from the pub window and when you want to catch a quick shot, you can enter the bar and easily go back outside and it may be small enough to slip into your pocket.
By staying with me all the time, I can snap the scenes every time I see them.
It’s a camera for quick shooting and social shooting – perhaps even dirt, spray or shoot from the hips. It’s probably the camera you’ve most reminded you of, but it’s probably not the camera you used to take photos of your favorite art. Ah, that would be this.
Artistic things
It may not be Technically Be your best camera. It may not have the most features. It may not be the smallest, the fastest, or the easiest to use. But the camera is the one that inspires you the most. That’s what makes you feel creativity just by looking at it. It’s something you choose when driving for hours to one place of slim hope that you might have a good light that night.
It’s a camera that makes you think about the art of the image rather than slowing you down and rattles off 1000 mediocre snaps. It is the camera that is responsible for the work you are most proud of.
Hasselblad 907X – Amazing, quirky camera.
This camera has a lot to do with it. It could be a film camera, whether in a medium sized 35mm or 120 format. That alone will slow you down and you’re not willing to spend a lot of money on the film, so you’ll take a more systematic approach. Or maybe it’s like a modern digital medium format like Fuji GFX or my personal favorite. Hasselblad’s 907x 100c -That strange little box gave me such a topic when I used it, so it was really difficult to let it go when I had to send it back.
Hasselblad’s X-PAN panorama mode proved to be extremely exciting. The image was even finalised for a major UK photography award.
It’s a camera you may not own yet, and you may probably not even know what you want. I had no idea I had any interest in film photography until very recently, but the other day I gave my fist a full cash in the car park and bought his medium Mamiya 645 Pro. Life sometimes throws your way. So this camera might be a camera that needs to be opened up a little. But it may also be the most happy you’ve got in the next few years.
3 types, 1 camera
Between the mainstay, everyday carry and the artistic one, you cover yourself with every aspect of photography, no matter what genre you want to dabble in.
I took my Canon R5 to Sicily where I played all the roles of the workhorse, brilliantly performing daily carry and inspiration cameras. You don’t necessarily need three separate cameras.
Of course, some cameras can do two things. Hell, some cameras could be all three. And that’s absolutely fine – as long as that one camera checks each of these three boxes for you. It’s really up to you to interpret whether your camera is small enough to be your daily carry and inspire enough to be your artistic. However, this rule certainly doesn’t mean you need to go out and buy two additional cameras.
With a compact prime, my Canon R5 could certainly be all three. It was a great everyday carry On a trip to Sicily And it prompted me to take artistic photos that I had licensed to enter a gorgeous travel book later. Also My main force. So, on that one trip alone, I ticked all three boxes. But that’s not always all of those things for me.
My Leica Q3 43 was an amazing daily carry camera above me Recent trips to the Swedish Arctic and Barcelona. It was the camera I took when I made multiple ferry trips to various remote Scottish islands and hanged with my brother on his 40th birthday. Yes, it’s also a camera that excites me, inspiring me and encouraging me to be more creative in filming. Is it a damn Leica and what photographer is not excited to take a photo when he has a Reika?
My Leica Q3 43 was an amazing daily carry and professional mainstay on my mission in Sweden. Has it also inspired me creatively? You bet.
But that was my recent foray into films, which taught me more about slowing down images and creating them. The pinnacle of this led me to get this Mamiya 645 as my artistic camera.
Certainly, as my work and my style develop and other cameras come and go, the cameras in that trio can change over the years, but the basic building blocks of workhorse, daily carry, and artistic things must always be filled with the cameras I have.
