Increases transmission production at GM Ohio Factory
General Motors (GM) plans to increase transmission production at its Toledo facility in Ohio.
The shift is intended to support the production of lightweight trucks assembled in Fort Wayne, Indiana and elsewhere.
The decision to increase production in Ohio follows a report on GM’s plans to increase production at the Indiana assembly plant in early April.
The development comes after US President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on automobile imports.
A spokesman for the automaker said GM’s Toledo production shift has nothing to do with US tariffs.
The spokesman said from the communications agency: “General Motors will amend production plans with Toledo Propulsion to support the additional capabilities of ice (internal combustion engine) propulsion units to meet current market demand and manufacturing resilience.”
Previously, GM announced a $760 million investment to convert the Toledo facility into a hub for production of EV drive units, deploying it as the company’s first US powertrain factory for EVs.
However, to date, no retail drive units have been produced on this site.
Toledo factory director Rob Morris said in a memo shared by Reuters with workers:
According to an internal memo, one of the drive unit’s production lines is scheduled to be converted to a transmit line, and there are no current updates on the future of the second drive unit’s production line.
Additionally, the automaker is making other adjustments to its EV strategy, including delaying the start of EV truck production at its Orion Assembly Plant in Michigan.
GM’s goal to produce and wholesale 200,000 EVs in North America in 2024 was short, with the actual figure reaching wholesale of 189,000 units.
