Inside Jeffrey Epstein’s Forgotten AI Summit

2002, artificial Intelligence was still winter. Despite decades of hard work, the dream of giving computers human-like cognition and real-world understanding has not been realized. A small group of scientists gathered for the “St. Thomas’ Common Sense Symposium” to find a path forward. AI pioneer Marvin Minsky was a central figure along with his protege push pindersin. After the symposium, Minsky, Singh and the famous philosopher Aaron Sloman The paper has been published About group ideas on how to reach human-like AI.

This paper talks about the struggles of AI in the early century. But one sentence really stands out today. In a short paragraph of approval, the author states that “the conference was made possible by Jeffrey Epstein’s generous support.” In fact, the symposium itself took place in the Virgin Islands, home to Epstein’s now hidden island of ignorance. Looking back at this event, it reveals something about the state of AI: viable funders for the symposium.

To the shame of the technology and science community, greedy sexual predators were able to buy their way into relationships with some of the most prominent and influential figures in the field. Epstein’s connections, including Bill Gates and Minsky, are thoroughly documented. In the deposition, Epstein survivor Virginia Giuffre claimed she was instructed to have sex with Minsky on Epstein’s island. Minsky’s wife says he accompanied scientists when he visited Epstein and only went to residences in New York and Palm Beach, but vehemently denied allegations that took place shortly before Minsky’s death and were not revealed until much later. Epstein passed away in prison in 2019 (don’t ask to break down conspiracy theory in one degree paragraph).

For most of my connections with Epstein in science and technology, my professional relationship with sexual predators has become an embarrassing and even awful fact. Epstein permeated these inner circles of the world and funded small gatherings attended by bold names. (I myself Notorious 2002 “Billionaire Dinner”At Ted, Epstein was mixed with Sergey Brin, Jeff Bezos, Rupert Murdoch, singer Naomi Judd and other well-known scientists. Some included people who flew to Epstein’s plane.

My source of knowing Epstein explained that financiers seemed truly fascinated by scientists. Sources say they didn’t know about his crime. They agreed to discuss Epstein only in anonymity states. “I went through him as this quirky, wealthy man who liked to surround himself with interesting people and scientists and asked a lot of questions about the world,” the source says. “He was as interested in the character of a scientist as he did with the work of a scientist.” Epstein himself apparently understood why he was welcomed in those circles. “I’m just a science enthusiast.” He said Journalist Jeffrey Melvis in 2017. “But the money I understand, (and) I’m a pretty good mathematician.”

Invitation only

Epstein’s Spector casts a dark shadow at the 2002 symposium. But how did the event come? My sources gave me a backstory that had not been previously reported. “Jeffrey said how much he liked Marvin and what he loved talking to him about AI,” the source says. The subjects were less popular that year. “It was a time when people were really skeptical about whether AI had legs or not,” my source said. That’s why the idea came up to host a small AI gathering with Minsky at the center. (It’s not clear if the event funds came from Donation of $100,000 Made by Epstein to support Minksey’s research. )

After some deliberations, it was decided that the event would focus on ideas from Minsky’s star student Singh. In 1996, Shin wrote a short paper called “.Why AI failed. ” To gain human intelligence, he insisted: The problem is that building such a system is equivalent to “solving AI.” (Bill Gates read the paper and commented, “I think your observations about the AI field are correct.”

Perhaps the St. Thomas Symposium was one way to face the problem head on. However, this event was difficult to organize. The initial list of possible participants lacked the power of the star and had to be enhanced. Eventually, the guest list came to include Roger Schank, a well-known AI theorist. The obituary was damaged By attending the event and providing a short spell as Trump University Chief Learning Officer. Another participant was Doug Lenat, the inventor of an ambitious CYC project, who involved a man who painstakingly inputs descriptions of everyday objects into a database for AI research. I also attended Burner Wingscience fiction writers are AI singularity. British philosopher Slomanapproaching 90 was one of the subsequent additions. “I wasn’t on Epstein’s original invitation list,” he emailed me earlier this week. “I was added at Marvin Minsky’s suggestion, because by then I had helped oversee his students (pushing sin).” Sloman says his memory of the event is weak. But he “seems to remember Epstein provided extravagant resources, such as taking him to the location using a private plane.”
