Inside the American flag factory: Kansas City Alliance Materials

“It’s like our Christmas,” said Tyler Young, president of Allied Materials. “We will start preparing a few months in advance. Knowing this is a weekend, Americans building additional inventory show their patriotism most enthusiastically. ”

The company is the largest vertically integrated flag maker in the United States, producing over 300,000 flags per year through federal agencies, including the US Senate, the Department of Defense and military bases around the world.

“We will set up a federal-compliant flag,” Young said. “That means all components are supplied In America – From cotton seeds to dyed fabrics. There are no corner cuts and no cost savings. It is truly the best flag you can place in front of your home. ”

Each flag starts from American cotton or nylon, dyed, rolled, and cut into stripes. They were sewn together in Kansas City and joined an embroidered Starfield, made at the company’s Louisiana facility. All flags are inspected and trimmed before the final touch.

“From start to finish, that flag may only take a few hours,” Young said. “But the purpose it offers will last a lifetime.”

For many of Allied employees, the purpose is personal.

“These people work really hard,” said Terry Walker, a longtime mechanical engineer. “All fallen veterans get one of these flags. It’s an honor to work here.”

Young said the severity is shared across the company. “The next time someone sees this flag, it may be covered on a veteran’s co-op. It must be perfect. We owe it to that soldier and their families to respect their sacrifice.”
