Is Steel Dynamics stock below the S&P 500 performance?
Indiana-based Steel Dynamics, Inc. (STLD) operates in the United States as a steel producer and metal recycler. With a market capitalization of $19.6 billion, the company operates through four segments. Steel operations, metal recycling operations, steel manufacturing operations, and aluminum operations.
Companies worth more than $10 billion are usually referred to as “large caps.” STLD fits that category, with market capitalization exceeding this threshold, reflecting substantial scale and influence in the steel industry. STLD is one of the leading steel producers and metal recyclers in the United States, and benefits from being one of the most diverse steel companies with a vast range of specialized products.
Despite its strengths, the stock has surpassed 14.4% from its 52-week high that was touched on November 6, 2024. Additionally, for the past three months, STLD stocks have grown by 6.6%, surpassing the same time frame increase of the S&P 500 Index ($SPX) 5.4%.
STLD stocks rose 16.7% on a YTD basis, surpassing SPX’s 1.7% increase in 2025. However, STLD has skyrocketed 5.2% over the past 52 weeks, falling below SPX’s 9.3% profit.
To confirm bullish trends, STLDs have been trading mostly above the 200- and 50-day moving average since late April.
STLD shares rose 3.4% after first quarter earnings were announced on April 22nd. Steel producers and metal recycling recorded revenue of $4.37 billion over this period. Additionally, the quarterly adjusted EPS of $1.44 exceeded the consensus estimate by 2.9%.
Within the Steel Arena, Rival Nucor Corporation (NUE) grew 4.7% in 2025, but fell 22.4% over the past year, resulting in a decline in stock performance.
Of the 12 analysts who cover STLD stocks, the consensus rating is “strong buy.” The average price target of $147.91 suggests a modest 11.1% upside potential from current price levels.
